The Master in Synthesis, Catalysis and Molecular Design


is a joint Master organized by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and the Institute of Chemical Research of Catolonia (ICIQ).
The Master takes place over a year (October to July) and is divided in two practically equal parts devoted to theoretical courses (first term) and to develop the Master Project (second term).

Scholarships For the course 2020/2021, about 16 scholarships will be provided from both URV and ICIQ.
The grants cover the fees and part of other costs. The calls will open soon.

Online courses
For 2020/2021, new possibilities to follow the courses online are being developed . If it is necessary (due to COVID19), all the courses will be online.
Although not necessary, we are working to permit to follow the master courses online except the Master Thesis and some practice work.
The Master Thesis would be performed in the URV or ICIQ laboratories, from March to July.

The Master offers a scientific training that includes new methods of synthesis, development of catalysts, computational design and management of environmentally friendly chemical processes.


The Master provide a wide formation in the field of synthetic chemistry by integrating methods and design of organic synthesis, modern methods of catalysis (homogeneous, heterogeneous, organo- and biocatalysis) and quantum chemistry.

The organization of the Master allows the student define their own curriculum by the selecting different topics. Thus it is possible to have formation in all the areas indicated above or to be specialized in a particular one.

The master provides access to doctorate studies, and the graduated students also acquire the skills required to address research, development tasks and innovative activities in the industry.

General objectives:

To provide a high level scientific training in the fields of chemical synthesis, catalysis and molecular design, that will facilitate a further development of a doctoral thesis in these fields.

To provide students with the capacity for innovation and for developing sustainable synthetic processes.

To be able of designing routes of synthesis for obtaining new products with the help of computational tools.

To know and understand the principles and the advanced applications of catalysis, included metallo-, organo-, bio- and surface catalysis.

The master also offers the possibility to continue the formation through PhD programs supervised by researchers of the organizing institutions.


Career oportunities

The Master is oriented to develop I+D+i activities in chemistry, providing a solid access to the doctorate, but the formation provided is also appropriate for developing those activities in the industry

Incorporating a doctorate and completion of a doctoral thesis.

Access to leading productive sectors that have interdisciplinary research groups. The spectrum is broad, as most industrial processes require a catalyst. However, the sectors most involved with the masters are generally fine chemicals: synthesis of intermediates, pharmaceutical chemicals, agrochemical, plant and synthesis of polymers and smart materials. The training received enables graduates to design and develop new products and processes in the field of general chemical companies.
